[edit] Invalid format when starting a virtual console game

My LG TV gave me a message saying "Invalid format" when trying to start Super Mario 3. If I press the Home-button on the Wiimote I can see the game running in the background, but if I close the menu I get the invalid format message again.

This thread gave the solution: 

  what you should do is go into the Operations Manual for the game which isn't working, 
  and with the nunchuk plugged in, press Z A and 2 simultaneously, and you should hear 
  a beep, indicating that it's worked. Apparently though it doesn't work with Sonic 1 on the Megadrive...
